BONHAM, MILLEDGE L.
(1813 - 1890) Confederate brigadier general who commanded Morris Island at war's start, and a brigade at First Bull Run, resigned and served as Governor of South Carolina, then reappointed to rank and led cavalry in the Carolinas. Rare war-date L.S. as Governor of South Carolina on official letterhead, 1p. oblong 8vo., Columbia, Nov. 8, 1864, to Confederate Congressman W. Porcher Miles in Richmond. In part: ""àYour being on the Military Committee and familiar with the ways of the seaboard, together with the importance of the interests involved, lead me to enclose the written papers to yourself and Col. Witherspoon and to beg that you will present it to the President [Jefferson Davis] and asks his early considerationà"". Undoubtedly, Bonham predicted that Sherman would soon advance north from Savannah to threaten Charleston, and was most eager to secure more defensive forces for the important port. Dampstain affects six words in the text which remains entirely legible, trimmed slightly at bottom, otherwise very good.
