(BOND FOR PURSUIT OF A RUNAWAY SLAVE): L.S. 1p. large folio, Lancaster district, S.C., May 8, 1860, in which seven prominent citizens of the county:"...take pleasure in certifying that John Foster...is a gentleman of irreproachable moral character...being one of our wealthy planters...we freely tender our guaranty of any bond ...to procure the liberation from custody and obtain the possession of two of his slaves said to be detained by the town authorities of Harrisburg [Pennsylvania]...the said slaves have been either directly or indirectly ...seized by the authorities aforesaid...". Doubtless the former slaves were in no hurry to "Procure their liberation" and be returned to South Carolina, and were likely being given refuge by the Town of Harrisburg. Some fold wear, repaired with paper from the area on the verso, likely in the courthouse. A dramatic document, very good. $300-400
