BOMBAY PRESIDENCY: "tin" pice (17.45g), 1747, KM-156.1, East India Company issue, AUSPICIO/REGISET/SENATUS/ANGLIAE/ date below, usual sprue mark at top, dated examples are rarely encountered, Fine, R. Very little has been known about the tin series until Dr. Stevens' book on Bombay, which will be a most welcome addition to numismatic libraries. Paul Stevens has ascertained that these coins were tin up to 1717. From 1740 to 1770 the alloy was changed to one called tutenag, which was mostly zinc, imported by the East India Company from China.
