BLIGH ( Thomas ), Lieutenant General : -. Reflections on the conduct of General Bligh, and Commodore Lord Howe, on the French coast. London : Printed for J. Pridden, at the Feathers, in Fleet-street, near Fleet-Bridge. [1758?]FIRST (ONLY) EDITION, pp (4), 16, with half-title, 8vo, recent wrapper : very good copy. ESTC locates copies at L, C / MBAt, MH, NN, NjP. Not found on-line in D. Bligh (1693-1775), of Rathmore, Co Meath, soldier and politician, represented Athboy as MP for sixty years. During his long military career he was involved in actions at Dettingen, Malle and Fontenoy. In 1758 he was in command of the troops in an invasion of Normandy. Initially, the campaign went well with the capture of Cherbourg and the destruction of its port. However, setbacks occurring at St Malo led to a humiliating retreat with heavy casualties. Desptie the fact that Horace Walpole described Bligh as ‘an old general routed out of some horse-armoury in Ireland’ he had been held in high esteem in military circles until this reversal. The subject of this present pamphlet reflects a feeling at the time that the general had been made a political scapegoat in an opppoosition attempt to discredit William Pitt's war policy. Bligh resigned from the army and returned to his family seat at Brittas House, Nobber, Co Meath, where he is said to have planted woodlands in line with the troop formations he had used in his various battles.ENGLISH PRE 1801; HISTORY; ENGLAND; EUROPE; NAVAL; ; ; ; ; ; ;
