<B>BLANCHE MCVEIGH (1895-1970)</B></I><BR><I>Gwine to Heaven,</B></I> 1945<BR>Etching aquatint<BR>15in. x 7in.<BR>Signed lower right<BR>Titled lower left<BR><BR>Blanche McVeigh began as a school teacher in Fort Worth, but left teaching to study art at Washington University in St. Louis. She subsequently studied at the Art Students League, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and Oklahoma State University, where she studied under Doel Reed, who was the acknowledged master of the aquatint medium (Blanche McVeigh's specialty). This wonderful example of her most famous print is based on her impressions of a negro spiritual. <I>Gwine to Heaven</B></I> was awarded the Lila May Chapman prize of the Southern States Art League and was included in the book, <I>American Prize Prints of the Twentieth Century.</B></I> It was invited the same year to a special print show at the Carnegie Institute. It was also selected as a purchase for inclusion in the Pennell Fund Exhibit at the Library of Congress. The print was exhibited at the Laguna Beach Art Association, Dallas Print Club, Society of American Etchers, Prairie Print Makers, and the California Print Club.<BR><BR>The print is inscribed: <I>To Mary and David.</B></I><BR><BR>Provenance:<BR>Acquired from the artist<BR>Fort Worth Estate<BR><BR> <B>Condition Report:</B> Excellent condition.
