BISHOP FULTON J. SHEEN`S GOLD RING
FULTON J. SHEEN (1895 - 1979) Roman Catholic priest and bishop, author of sixty books, pastor of a radio and television congregation numbering 30 million. Sheen is now a candidate for canonization. An important Sheen relic, a massive gold ring with engraved crest, once owned and worn by Sheen. The 14 karat yellow gold ring bears a red stone seal showing a cross at center with four lions within, and a crown at top from which rises a bent arm bearing a sword. The crest bears a motto in Latin at bottom: ""AUT CESAR AUT N[IHILL]"". The stone is chipped at the left edge, affecting the wreath surrounding the seal, and affecting the last four letters of the motto. The consignor, a retired State of Connecticut Deputy Sheriff, writes in his letter of provenance (included) that the ring had been damaged after Sheen struck his hand against an altar. The ring was given to a jeweler, the consignor's cousin, with the request that an exact duplicate be made and that the original ring be scrapped. The jeweler instead retained the ring and gave it to the consignor in 1986. A most impressive relic!
