War-date A.E.S. "D. B. Birney" adding rank, "Hd. Qrs. 1st Div. in 3rd Corps", Oct. 8, 1862, writing eight lines, in part: "The within recommendations are cordially endorsed by me…". On the verso of an A.L.S. by THOMAS W. EGAN (1836 - 1887) as colonel of the 40th New York, 3pp. 4to., Monocacy, Md., Oct. 3, 1862, concerning the promotion of several members of that regiment.
