The salt flats cover several hundred acres, and the salt supplied all of western Texas, southern New Mexico, and northern Mexico. Citizens on both sides of the border had always collected the salt for free. In the late 1860s, various factions began to try to gain private control of the site. The feud turned violent and eventually pitted Mexicans and Mexican Amercians against the Anglos. The Texas governor sent both the Texas Rangers and the U. S. Army to quell the violence. The "Salt War" forced the government to take a more assertive position in controlling what had been a fairly lawless part of the state.

Provenance:
Collection of Bill and Mary Cheek

Condition Report: Excellent condition.
