BILL MAULDIN WWII
BILL MAULDIN WWII "WILLIE AND JOE" DRAWINGS. Lot of 3 original Mauldin drawings on heavy artboard. Two are Willie and Joe cartoons in ink, the 3rd a more realistic infantryman in crayon with a watercolor wash. In the first cartoon, Willie is looking at Joe's foot (or is Joe looking at Willie's foot?) and saying "Im jest a country doctor. If ya don't mind, I'll consult wit' Pfc. Johnson, th' famous blister specialist." The second cartoon has a title of "My Achin' Back," and depicts two soldiers with French(?) women. The caption reads, "After tonight I'll always feel a personnal indebtedness to th' Hershey chocolate people." On this drawing, changes to the caption are apparent. The third drawing is unusual both in its realism and in its use of several colors. This one shows an exhausted, war-weary infantryman dropping his rifle (probably before he himself drops). All drawings show some toning of edges of artboard, with little affecting the images. None are signed. Bill Mauldin is a 2-time Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, who more than anyone captured the spirit and tribulations of the "Average Joe" in the infantry in the WWII European theater. Mauldin's compilation of the Willie and Joe cartoons, "Up Front," has been reprinted several times, again in 1987.
