BILL MAULDIN WILLIE AND JOE DRAWINGS, WWII.
BILL MAULDIN WILLIE AND JOE DRAWINGS, WWII. Lot of 3 drawings by Mauldin, mostly ink on artboard. The first is a Willie and Joe cartoon, with the 2 in a foxhole in the rain. The caption reads, "Now that ya mention it, Joe, it does sound like th' patter of rain on a tin roof." The second is a more serious view of bedraggled and injured soldiers in the streets of a European town with the caption, '"Fresh, spirited American troops, flushed with victory, are bringing in thousands of hungry, ragged battle-weary prisoners..." (News item)'. The third is a Mauldin "classic," with two rather well-fed-looking soldiers standing on a mountain with the caption, "Beautiful view. Is there one for enlisted men?" This one outlined in ink, with crayon fill. All three show some edge toning, not affecting images, else VG. Bill Mauldin is a 2-time Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, who more than anyone captured the spirit and tribulations of the "Average Joe" in the infantry in the WWII European theater. Mauldin's compilation of the Willie and Joe cartoons, "Up Front," has been reprinted several times, again in 1987.
