 BIG FOUR CUP AND SAUCER
"BIG FOUR" CUP AND SAUCER
Fine china cup, 3 1/2" diameter, with matching saucer, 6" diameter, each decorated around the rim with the flags of Britain, France, the United States, and the Soviet Union. The only marking present is the number "20" on the base of the cup. The cup has one small chip on the inside rim, else very good. These items were used at meetings of the Allied Control Council, which was established one month after the surrender of Nazi Germany in May 1945, to issue directives, laws, and proclamations to the zones occupied by each nation. The council met in the American sector of Berlin, with representatives Dwight D. Eisenhower (U.S.), Bernard Montgomery (Britain), Jean Lattre de Tassigny (France), and Georgi Zhukov (USSR). The Council was dissolved on March 20, 1948 when the Soviet delegation walked out in protest of the western powers' desire to implement the Marshall Plan in Eastern European countries controlled by the USSR.
