BERNHARD ROGGE
(1895 - 1970) German admiral who commanded the heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper which sank the British destroyer HMS Glowworm. Later commanding admiral of the German naval forces in the Black Sea and of the small naval combat forces, which included mini-submarines, combat divers, etc. Fine content A.L.S. signed twice, 5pp. large 4to., [Munich?, 1968], in english. In part: "...I myself joined the Navy in 1914...My last command was the 'Admiral of the small fighting units' of the Navy...I was Captain of the heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper (fighting with the R. B. Destroyer Glowworm...into the harbor of Tronheim...Chief of Staff of the German Northern Fleet...the last command was the small fighting units...the losses were normal - not too high - naturally except prisoners of war, because these small ships was not protected against gun fire...most of theme were very brave sailors...all soldiers were volunteers...three brothers of my father were killed in action...". Show-through of writing on verso is apparent, still entirely legible and otherwise very good.
