BERKELEY ( George ) : - Jackson ( Humphrey). Reflexions concerning the virtues of tar water. Wherein is proved by experience, that its present preparation is not founded upon philosophical principles ; and that, as now prepared, it may probably occasion more diseases than it can possibly cure. With hints for its improvement, so as to make it a most efficacious and pleasant medicine. Printed for J. Johnson, 1744FIRST EDITION, pages 19, (1, blank), 8vo, recent wrapper : a very good to nice copy. Keynes 85. ESTC locates nine copy : L, O, Mru, NT, Dt / MH-H, WU, DNLM and CaOTU. Jackson (c.1721-1821), Yorkshire born, London-based, chemist and inventor. This, his first book, cogently argued the case for his own product over Berkeley's. His chemical skill was further evidenced by experimental findings in 1751 in support of the famous fever powder patented by Robert James and by his patent specification of 1753 for a very successful cordial bitter tincture. His Essay on Bread (1758), defended bakers and millers against allegations concerning adulteration of bread levelled by Peter Markham and Joseph Manning ; it was the first reliable book on the chemical detection of food adulteration. In 1768 he patented a method for hardening and preserving wood, which was approved by the College of Physicians and effectively applied to several warships (ODNB).ENGLISH PRE 1801; MEDICINE; CHEMISTRY; SCIENCE; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;
