BERIA, LAVRENTY PAVLOVICH
(1899 - 1953) Russian politician, the dreaded head of Stalin's security agency, the NKVD, who oversaw the Great Purge of 1934-38 and ordered the deaths of thousands. Unable to resist the power of his position, Beria sought to succeed Stalin and was in turn tried and executed himself. Very rare, partly-printed D.S. ""Beria"" 1p. tall 4to., [n.p.], Sept. 16, 1924, a letter regarding the interment of a female prisoner, Tamarin Beridze, sentenced to five years in jail with strong isolation. This letter orders that she not be let out of jail because of her previous support of the anti-Bolsheviks, and her hiding anti-Bolsheviks in her home. Very boldly signed by Beria at bottom in his typical red grease-pencil. Folds and very slight wear to edges, else very good.
