BERIA, LAVRENTY PAVLOVICH
(1899 - 1953) Russian politician, the dreaded head of Stalin's security agency, the NKVD, who oversaw the Great Purge of 1934-38 and ordered the deaths of thousands. Unable to resist the power of his position, Beria sought to succeed Stalin and was in turn tried and executed himself. Rare D.S. signed twice, once in Russian, once in Georgian, 1p. 4to., [Georgia], Nov. 18, 1925 in which Beria, as head of the Georgia Cheka, orders an agent to arrest a lady: "…whose address is known to you…". Trimmed at left margin costing a few letters of text, else very good.
