BERENICE ABBOTT (American, 1898-1991) LOWER EAST SIDE (CORNER ORCHARD AND STANTON) signed "Berenice Abbott" in pencil on verso signed, titled and dated "Lower East Side, Corner Orchard & Stanton, 1929" in pencil on verso Berenice Abbott "50 Commerce Street" stamp on verso vintage gelatin silver print mounted on board 413/16 x 611/16 in. (12.2 x 17 cm) 1929 ESTIMATE: $4,000-6,000 PROVENANCE Harry Lunn, NEW YORK & PARIS When Berenice Abbott made this photograph she had recently returned to the U.S. after several years in Paris, where she had assisted Man Ray. Made with a hand-held camera, this image is like a page from a sketchbook, scouting the territory where Abbott would spend the next several years working systematically with a large view camera. As custodian of Eugene Atget's archive, which she brought to New York, she was intimately familiar with his photographs. With her European polish she prowled the streets of the lower east side, avidly rediscovering the city she would claim as her own.
