In this photograph, these towers are depicted in their first glory looming over the Lower East Side tenement buildings. Completed in 1913, the Woolworth Building was the tallest in the world until 1929, when the Manhattan Bank building and the Chrysler building surpassed it. In her search for an authentic document, Abbott captured the special character of an early winter morning with strong sunlight and slush still visible in the street.
