BENTEEN, FREDERICK W.
(1834 - 1898) American army officer, a captain in Custer's 7th Cavalry who was ordered by Custer to patrol an area near the Indian's village during the battle at Little Big Horn. During the action, Benteen relieved Reno's forces which were under attack, the two groups holding out until relieved by forces under Terry. Rare A.L.S. "F. W. Benteen Bvt. Col., U.S.A.", 2pp. 4to., Springfield, Aug. 3, 1881 to Albee, in part: "…The Board has adjourned to meet next Tuesday, but have excused me till Thursday. I do not think that they will have anything before them even by Thursday, so you can use your discretion in coming back…I shall of course go to Point Pleasant…". Light toning, else very good.
