<b>45. JUDAH P. BENJAMIN</b> (1811 - 1884) Confederate Secretary of War and Secretary of State who became very unpopular for his convictions that Southern slaves should be armed to fight for the Confederacy, which of course eventually came to be. The only Jew in the Confederate Cabinet, he fled to England at war's end to avoid prosecution. A.L.S. signed twice "<i>J. P. Benjamin</i>" and "<i>J.P.B.</i>" 1p. 4to., New Orleans, Feb. 27, 1835, to Washington Moody, in part: "<i>...I have at length the pleasure of enclosing you a check for the amount of claim against Mr. Parton...[here Benjamin lists figures] I collect claims for sums over one thousand dollars at five per ct. J.P.B.</i>". Moderate tape repairs throughout, else very good.<b> $400-500</b>
