<b>44. JUDAH P. BENJAMIN</b> (1811 - 1884) Confederate Secretary of War and Secretary of State who became very unpopular for his convictions that Southern slaves should be armed to fight for the Confederacy, which of course eventually came to be. The only Jew in the Confederate Cabinet, he fled to England at war's end to avoid prosecution. Pre-war A.L.S. "<i>J. P. Benjamin</i>", 1p. 4to., San Francisco, Nov. 9, 1860 to bankers Riggs & Co. In part: "<i>...Please collect the enclosed bill for my account, viz bill by Barron & Co., on Goodhue & Co. New York for ten thousand three hundred dollars at three days sight. I send you the first only, and will bring the second in person, as I shall leave on the steamer tomorrow...</i>" A few tiny, errant tape spots away from all writing, overall very good.<b>$400-600</b>
