(1682 - 1757) Colonial Governor of Massachusetts unsuccessful in his attempts to balance colonial and royal interests and embroiled in the Broad Arrow and New Hampshire boundary disputes. Good content A.L.S. 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d. docketed Dec. 16, 1719] to Thomas Emory in South Carolina which had just endured attacks by the French and the Spanish: ""...I heartily rejoice in your welfare, - & in the great Civilities, & many friendships you receive at So. Carolina- yet I find the fears of your loss of health, of the place being attackt by the Enemy, together with ye domestik differences of that Province &ca. have discouraged your from fixing at So. Carolina, and that you intend hither in the spring, where I shall always be glad to render you any acceptable services in my power. My last advices from Madeira, & the Western Islands the vintages were like to be very good. 100 pipes of either port wud. do very well here. Early in the Spring Madeiras are now worth 24L a pipe...I shall carry Colltr. Rhetts: Certificate to our Import office to recover back the duty of ye Negroes..."" On the verso, Belcher's secretary has transcribed a letter dated Nov. 19, 1719 which apparently never arrived in South Carolina due to the hostilities there. Very good condition.
