BEHIND THE SCREEN

Window Card (14" x 22"); Stone Litho
Fine+ on Paper
Mutual, 1916

This window card has been meticulously restored on cardstock, with minor wrinkles being smoothed out. A tear at the top that extended into Chaplin's hair, along with other tears in the credit area and near his right foot, have been expertly repaired. The left and bottom borders were trimmed prior to mounting the card, which did not impact the artwork.

When Charlie Chaplin signed on with the Mutual Film Corporation in 1916, he was already one of the leading artists in silent film. Although he had made successful films at Essanay Studios before, Mutual's offer of $670,000 for twelve two-reel comedies, along with almost complete artistic freedom and control, was too good to pass up. This, the seventh film in Chaplin's Mutual contract, satirizes the film industry that had made him a star and is widely considered to be one of Chaplin's best.
