BEAUREGARD, PIERRE G. T.
(1818 - 1893) Confederate major general who initiated the attack on Fort Sumter that started the Civil War. He also led with distinction at First Bull Run, Shiloh, and in the defense of Richmond. Important D.S. ""G. T. Beauregard"" adding rank as brevet major U. S. Engineer Corps, 1p. folio, Fort St. Philip, La., [n. d.], concerning an estimate for improving the fort. In part: ""àEstimates of funds requisite for the operation at Fort St. Philip, La. during the fiscal year 1860à"". Entries include the projected improvements to be made to various parts of the fort, such as setting gun placements at a cost of $3,079.25, repairing cracks and painting at a cost of $3,000.00, and river shore revetment using piles and three foot planks of wood at a cost of $5,286.86, with the costs for material and workmanship topping approximately $29,000. Interestingly, the renovations were to take place after the start of the Civil War, ending on June 30, 1861, and were proposed by a future Confederate general who played a major role in starting the war. By April 1862, this fort and Fort Jackson were charged with defending New Orleans from Yankee invasion. During the Union advance on the city, Fort St. Philip failed to fall to Admiral Farragut's main attack, a result that can be most likely attributed to Beauregard's attendance. In turn, the Union Navy risked running the fort in order to capture New Orleans, and the fort fell only after the city's surrenderer. Very good.
