BEAUREGARD, PIERRE G. T.
(1818 - 1893) Confederate major general who initiated the attack on Fort Sumter which started the Civil War. Beauregard also led with great distinction at First Bull Run, Shiloh, and in the defense of Richmond. War-date A.D.S. "G. T. B." at the bottom of a 1p. 8vo. partly-printed telegraph form, Corinth, Apr. 22, 1862. General Samuel B. Maxey, at that time protecting the approaches to Vicksburg, urgently telegrams Beauregard: "Working party yet out. A road leads from Pittsburg to Pocahontas passing south of Purdy seven miles & intersecting Railroad ten miles south of this. Shall I obstruct it. Please answer immed'y. S. B. Maxey Brig. Genl". At bottom, Beauregard writes his reply, in pencil: "Yes - obstruct it at once. G. T.B.". Browned at margins with some chipping thereat, one interior chip, yet only one letter in Beauregard's text is affected. Overall just good.
