BEATTIE ( Wm. ), M.D. Switzerland. Illustrated in a series of views taken expressly for this work by W. H. Bartlett, Esq. George Virtue 1836FIRST EDITION, with additional engraved title-pages, a folding map and 106 attractive engraved plates of views, pages (2), iv, (2), 188 : (4), 152, 2 vols, 4to (28 by 22 cms), contemporary pale brown morocco, the spines lettered in gilt "Switzerland" and the volume number, inside gilt borders, edges gilt, embossed overall in blind, signed on both boards "I. Dobson / London" : a little wear at head of both spines but the headbands strong and intact, with a small light stain in the extreme blank margin of some plates (well clear of the engraved surfaces in all but ten of the plates) : nonetheless, a large and attractive copy.The first of Bartlett's collaborations with Virtue, as well as the first major travel book by the company. The design for the spine or the boards is not included in Jamieson's English Embossed Bindings, 1825-1850, though the spine design is similar to her number 38, though ours has at foot a lyre and two trumpets which she notes as being present on an album by G. Rowley of London, in the Bodleian.(2)TRAVEL; EUROPE; SWITZERLAND; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;
