The rebels are well fortified…we are building fortifications within one hundred rods of the enemy. We have to work in the nit. I have worked on the fortifications two nits and the rebels fired from their rifle pits at our pickets. There was a blaze of fire for a mile long. We fire a few shots of shell at them and they stopped firing. There is a crick between us and the rebels. There was 4 companies of the Vermont regiments went threw the crick the other day [April 16, battle for Dam Number One] and was cut up very bad. There was 30 killed and a number wounded. The rebels raised a flag of truce to berry their dead. There was a lot of them killed…this will be the last battle if we whip them…". First page is a bit light but legible, else very good.
