133. [BATTLE OF LEESBURG]

A description of this Confederate victory penned by a Confederate soldier. Manuscript, 6pp, 8vo, n.p., n.d. Unsigned. The Yankees had crossed the Potomac from Maryland thinking “they would get in rear of Gen. Evan forces, and cut them off from retreat, or from any reinforcements sent him by Genr’l Joe Johnson. But the ever vigilant and plucky Genr’l. Evans was not to be caught in this trap...” Though outnumbered, Evans ordered a “quick, fierce charge on [General] Baker’s men” who “broke ranks running in every direction, as the Confeds rushed on them...shouting that terrible rebel yell. When they reached the Potomac, they found themselves on a bluff, not less than seventy five, or a hundred feet deep...in trying to escape the pursuing Rebels, they went pell mell over this bluff, many of them breaking their necks...while numerous lodged in the vines growing in a tangled mass on the banks below, remaining there until devoured by varmints, and vultures...” The writer continues, describing a humorous incident following the battle. “A few days after this battle I had to stand guard on this bluff...The sentinel I relieved, remarked to me that...he could hear such strange, and hideous noises, and cautioned me to keep a close watch...on my third round ...I saw distinctly something near the size of a man, wrapped in white cross my path...I cocked my gun saying, ‘Third and last time, who comes there!’...” To the writer’s immense relief, the reply came, “Don’t shoot Ab. It is I!” The apparition was his companion Paice Tappan who had dawned a white blanket. Pages bound by a straight pin; light general age toning; o/w Fine.
