BATTLE OF ANTIETAM LOSSES: War-date partly-printed 2pp. 22 1/2" x 18", a regimental return for the entire 11th Connecticut Vols. showing their overwhelming losses at Antietam, dated at Newport News, Va., March 3, 1863. The whereabouts of each soldier including field officers are listed and indicating 577 men where present for duty at that time. Approximately twenty-three enlisted men, including their lieut. colonel Moegling, are listed as being casualties of the bloody attempt to capture Burnside's Bridge in their attempt to turn the Confederate flank during the battle of Antietam. Manuscript portion of document gives a very detailed outline of their losses reading, in very small part: "...Co. D...G. Brown wounded & on furlough...Co. E...Harter, Benton, Hall, Smith...in hospital Antietam Hospital, Md., Sept 17, 62...Co. F...Smith detailed ambulance Corps...Oct 18, 62...Kimball in hospital Washington D.C. Sept. 17, 62...Co. G...Jno. Murray wounded battle Antietam Sept. 17...". Signed by future brevet brigadier general GRIFFIN A. STEDMAN, JR. (1838-1864), who was killed in action in front of Petersburg on Aug. 5, 1864.
