Lobby Card (11" x 14")

Columbia, 1943

This card is from Chapter 9, "The Sign of the Sphinx," and features a great close shot of the Dynamic Duo plotting their next week. This example is unrestored and exhibits border pinholes and staple holes along with a smudge, several pinholes in the lower background area, and a few unobtrusive scratches.

This series is notable for many reasons. Lewis Wilson was the first actor to portray Batman on film. It also introduced story elements that became part of the Batman canon, such as the Batcave and its secret entrance from Wayne Manor. The series was released weekly starting in June of 1943. In the film, Batman and Robin are depicted as government agents, fighting against the evil Japanese spy Prince Daka, rather than independent crime fighters, which the censors felt would be promoting vigilantism. This was Columbia's largest-scale serial production to date and was reissued theatrically in 1954 and 1962.
