BARTHOLDI, FREDERIC AUGUSTE
(1834 - 1904) French sculptor known for his colossal figures, most notably the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. Fine content A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., [Paris], Jan. 28, 1903, in French to a friend. In small part: ""...You know the Mayor of Montmartre and you could help us a lot. He is taking certain measures in the city...about the monument of Aeronauts as if the only thing that mattered is to get rid of this nuisance. I don't think it is very wise on his part...He would have tried to put himself in contact with us instead of talking...It would have been polite of him to at least ask to see the works...and come and listen to the artist...If the Mayor starts conflicts within the city and doesn't want to take into account our thoughts, then he will subject himself to difficulties that will result in my withdrawing myself by returning the money to my sponsors...If you could make him understand this, I believe you would help him and make me happy..."". Boldly written in his elegant hand, fine condition.
