FRIEDRICH WILHELM AUGUSTUS VON STEUBEN (1730-94). Historic American Revolutionary War Prussian Officer who trained the American Continental Army at Valley Forge, Recommended by Benjamin Franklin to General George Washington.
June 18, 17(7?)7 (tear in docket affects year), Autograph Document Signed, "Steuben", 7.75” x 6”, in French, "New"(burgh?), Very Fine. The Baron Von Steuben writes, in full: ”Mon Ami! (translated) "My Friend! - Have the goodness to give to the bearer Toussaint Lopes an order for Ten Pounds and you will oblige your affectionate friend - (Signed) Steuben." Some light show-through from contemporary figures on verso being calculations of both “Paper” (Currency) and “Specie” (Hard Coinage), not affecting Steuben's fine brown ink signature. A small 1/2” central left edge paper loss affects the docket date on the verso, so only “17-7” is clear. A very scarce Autograph Document prominently Signed by the famous Baron Friedrich Von Steuben.
Baron Von Steuben was designated Inspector General and trained the Continental Army at Valley Forge. He was a close friend of George Washington and wrote Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States (1778-79). After the American Revolutionary War, Baron von Steuben became an American citizen and was granted 16,000 acres of land in upstate New York for his loyalty and service. He died there in 1794 at age 64.
