BANTAM: Pangeran Maulana Muhammad Sedo Ning Rana, 1580-1596 (31.63g), Dav-405, as Zeno-777, Bantamese legend, Pangeran Ra around hexagonal central hole, Extremely Fine, RR.

H.C. Millies mentions this piece in his book, "Recherches sur Les Monnaies Des Indigenes De L'Archipel Indien et de la Peninsule Malaie, 1871". Millies wrote that the coin is not silver but silver-plated. He also stated that the coin is a fantasy, which he determined from the legend. The original coin has a legend PANGERAN RATOU. The mould for the silver-plated coin was made by an amateur (as he said), produced from a coin whose legend was not entirely legible. So the inscription is PANGERAN RA… (without the last word). See Millies # 111, and also Netscher and van der Chijs # 168. Apparently this is a quite old fantasy crown from Bantam. John Davenport mentions the piece as well in his book, "The Dollars of Africa, Asia & Oceania, 1969". It is possible that this type was cast for commemorative or presentation reasons in plated silver (ukon, in the local language). According to Alim A. Sumana, an Indonesian collector, the mould was not made of metal, but of clay, so the resulting casts are quite crude.
