BANKS, NATHANIEL P.
(1816 - 1894) Union major general who defeated Stonewall Jackson at Kernstown only to have Jackson crush his force at Cedar Mountain. Fine content and likely war-date A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., New Orleans, Feb. 4, [n.y.] to Capt. Henry L. Abbot (1831 - 1927), Banks' chief topographical engineer during the operations to capture New Orleans and reads in full: "It grieves me very much to part with you but I know the injustice to you personally which your detention will cause. I am sorry our government provides such slender compensation for Staff Officers, in a service where staff officers competent and well instructed - are so indispensable. But I hope the great error will be corrected - Upon turning over the business of your department to Major Houston you will be relieved from Service in this department. Accept my earnest thanks for the great good you have done us here - and my best wishes for your promotion and happiness". Abbot would go on to command the heavy artillery at Petersburgh. With cover from the transmittal envelope addressed in Banks' hand and signed at lower right. Usual folds, with one partial split, otherwise very good.
