He is depicted wearing an ornate red jacket with gold embroidery and tan boots holding a staff. She is wearing a beautiful red gown with a white silk bodice and decadent gold embroidery standing before an open window. William Fielding (circa 1582-1643) was a highly regarded political figure who held positions at court under James I and Charles I. He was created baron and viscount Fielding in 1620 and Earl of Denbigh on September 14, 1622. Susan Villiers, daughter of Sir George Villiers, and brother to the royal favorite George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham. The couple facilitated the introduction of Balthazar Gerbier to Charles I, who he would eventually serve as his art advisor. <B>Condition Report:</B> Both portraits have been relined with a water-based glue. The portrait of William Fielding was possibly cleaned around the eyes, and lace collar. Some strengthening to the upper right corner and right of the figure. The portrait of Susan Villiers shows scattered strenghthening to the upper portion of the canvas and to the right of the figure and craquelure. Both have thick, old varnish.
