BAHRI MAMLUK: Baybars II, 1309-1310, AV dinar (6.22g), al-Qahira, AH (70)8, A-V916, with his full titulature al-sultan al-malik al-muzaffar rukn al-dunya wa'l-din baybars qasim amir al-mu'minin al-mansuri filling the obverse field; this piece and the previous lot are the only known gold coins of Baybars II of the al-Qahira mint (a third example was later discovered, but of the Dimashq mint, which appeared in St. James Auction 39, Lot 1113), choice VF, RRRR, ex Gamal Amer Collection, ex Morton & Eden Auction, 23 April 2015, Lot 135. Baybars II came to power after the abdication of Muhammad I in AH708. He had previously been governor in Egypt for Muhammad I, suppressing a rebellion there in 701h. Baybars also served in the Mamluk army which defeated the Mongols at Marj al-Saffar in 702h, a victory which put an end to Mongol incursions into Syria.
