BABCOCK, ORVILLE E.
(1836 - 1884) Union brevet brigadier general who was Grant's aide-de-camp during the Civil War and presidency. He drowned while on an engineering project in Florida during 1884. L.S. "O. E. Babcock" as Grant's secretary on Executive Mansion letterhead, Washington, Dec. 18, 1872, to Attorney General George H. Williams, in full: "The President directs me to say that he would like to have P. C. Shaman of Pittsburgh, Pa., appointed to the first territorial judgeship made vacant". Very good.
