UNITED STATES [P] Scott #1TC3-2P3, 5c and 10c 1847 Plate proofs in panes of 100
Each with "SPECIMEN." overprinted diagonally, the 5c in black and the 10c in magenta. The 5c pane, which is the right pane from the plate of 200, is an orange brown shade. It has nice margins all around, except at the lower right corner, which is rounded; also, the top and right rows are somewhat oxidized along the outer edges. The 10c pane, the left pane from the plate of 200, has very little margin, being just clear or barely touching on three sides and just touching or cutting on the right; in addition, about 20% of the lower right corner stamp (position 100) is missing. There are a few other very minor flaws that occured in removing the panes from the American Bank Note Company archival book in which they were originally stored, but considering the fragile nature of the paper, they are remarkably fresh and sound. A unique set of sheets; an invaluable and, until now, unavailable aid in the plating of this popular and widely collected issue; accompanied by a 2002 PSE certificate. Estimate: $400,000-$500,000
