<B>UNITED STATES [MMB] Scott #539, 2c Carmine rose type II, perf. 11x10 coil waste</B><P>Top margin block of four with "S 20" imprint and plate #7462; a fresh, bright plate block that is typically centered for this rare issue (in fact, it shows much better centering than many we have seen), with full never hinged original gum (there are light pencil initials on the gum of the upper right stamp that appear as though they could easily be erased); a fine-very fine example of this rare 20th century plate block; accompanied by a 1988 PF certificate. These, and the subsequent "coil waste" issues, were produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing as a way to reclaim the "waste" that was produced during coil production. The beginning or end of each rotary press print run resulted in partial sheets of stamps that were too small to be coiled into 500-stamp rolls. Someone came up with the idea of cutting these small sheets into standard panes of 100 and then perforating them on the same perforating machines used in the production of the normal sheet-fed flat plate stamps. Consequently, this print overrun did not have to be destroyed or "wasted". Since these rotary press stamps were a bit wider (or taller) than the flat plate stamps for which the perforating machines were set, they are typically quite poorly centered. Scott $20,000.00
