UNITED STATES [C] Scott #5, 1c Blue, Type I
Pos. 7R1E, tied by a clear Cincinnati, O. c.d.s. on a partially printed cover which is inscribed "Circular, pre-paid" and bears a book publisher's corner card, addressed to the Odd Fellows' Lodge in Mt. Vernon, Ill.; the stamp is attractive, with a large part of the top sheet margin clearly showing the distinctive position dots and major double transfer necessary to identify the position. On the other hand, it is cut in at the bottom so that the characteristic type I full ornaments cannot be seen; in addition, there is a pre-use wrinkle at the lower left that shows evidence of having been "erased" to remove soiling and the cover shows a good bit of wear; still, considering the rarity of the 1c type I on cover (this is believed to be the only known use of a #5 on an advertising cover as well as the only #5 used alone to pay the 1c circular rate), this should still be a highly prized 1c 1851 cover; annotated and signed on the reverse by Ashbrook and accompanied by a 1990 PF certificate. (Scott for #5 on cover is $52,500). Estimate. $15,000-$20,000
