GERMANY [C] Hindenburg Crash cover
A remarkably intact cover franked with a single 50pf Hindenburg stamp (C57) and a block of four of the 25pf+15pf Costumes (B66), both of which are tied by clear strikes of the Hindenburg onboard cancel, 5 May 1937. The cover is addressed to a Hans Hoermann in New York City. It was delivered by registered mail to Mr. Hoermann, who, according the list compiled by the Foreign Section of the U.S. Post Office in New York, signed for a total of eight pieces of mail recovered from the Lakehurst, N.J. crash site. The cover is accompanied by certificate of authenticity from Arthur Falk and the Stamp Institute of America (also included with the cover is what would seem to be the original glassine envelope, with three Post Office Seals on the reverse, in which the cover was delivered, though no guarantee is made to that affect). A terrific cover, one of the most intact examples in existence. Estimate: $7,500-$10,000
