Width 3 ½ in.

The elegantly simplified head and beak with side-projecting eyes, combined with the strictly horizontal termination of the blade-like tail, indicate an early date for this pendant in the form of two partially fused birds. Often called "international", this style is found both in the northern and Caribbean areas of Colombia and in lower Central America, primarily Panama. It marks the move northward of the sophisticated gold casting techniques which had originated in what is now lower Colombia and northern Ecuador. The elaboration of the wing edges with a series of coils is unusual in the generally austere style. The condition is very good, with small veins visible from the back at both tips of the tail, the result of the hammering process used to complete the tail, which produces a delicate surface dimpling on the reverse.

The lot is sold with a statement of authenticity from the distinguished expert Robert Sonin.

Provenance
Charles Craig, Santa Barbara
