Award Winning, Golden Age, Northampton County, Pennsylvania Flintlock Rifle

Golden Age, Pennsylvania Flintlock rifle probably made by John Moll II of Allentown, Pennsylvania c. 1816. Attached to the rifle is a silver plate engraved "Kentucky Rifle Assn./1981/Best Non Carved Rifle". The rifle has the classic "Golden Age" features that include a curved butt-stock with "Roman Nose" comb, engraved, two-piece, brass patch box and shallow cheek rest. The unmarked, 41-inch, full octagon, barrel has a dove-tail mounted German silver front sight and iron rear sight. The barrel has been bored smooth to about .60 caliber. The flat-faced lock plate has beveled edges and a pointed tip with removable, fenced, iron pan. The goose neck hammer is flat with rounded edges. The lock plate is unmarked. The pin-fastened stock is cherry or walnut with a sheet brass forearm cap, brass ramrod pipes and a flat-faced brass side plate with beveled edges and arrow-shaped final. The brass trigger guard has a finger spur and finials with square ends. The wide, curved, buttplate has a facceted heel and square toe. The brass patch box has the distinctive head and engraved decorations found on several John Moll patch boxes. The patch box cover is decorated with double line engraving and simple scrollwork and has a buttplate heel release. The patch box head and decorations are nearly identical to the John Moll patch box illustrated on page 284 of "KENTUCKY RIFLE PATCHBOXES" by Roy F. Chandler. In addition to the engraved brass patch box, the stock is inlaid with an oval, German silver thumb-piece on the wrist and a stylized eight-pointed star on the top of the cheekpiece. Both of the inlays are decorated with simple scrollwork and floral designs.

Very good. The barrel has an even brown patina. The edges of the barrel are sharp and the barrel surfaces are smooth. The top and sides of the barrel adjacent to the vent have moderate flash pitting. There is moderate-heavy flash pitting on the lock plate and pan. The stock is in very good condition with a very attractive, dark, un-touched, patina. The stock has scattered, light, handling marks but no significant cracks and no repairs. The edges of the stock surrounding the lock plate have the typical wear associated with removal of the lock for cleaning. The brass, patch box, buttplate and furniture have never been polished and have a very attractive patina. The engraving on the German silver inlays and the patch box is crisp. This is an exceptional example of an award-winning, Golden Age, Pennsylvania rifle.
