ROBERT STROUD, American Ornithologist; The "Birdman of Alcatraz." Autograph Letter Signed "Robert Stroud #594" on a piece of ruled paper, February 21, 1949, Alcatraz, CA, 10.25" x 8," Choice Extremely Fine. In this letter to his sister, Mamie Stroud, of Illinois, Robert writes some interesting content: "I really do not want the government or anyone else to supply me with ways of making a living. If they will turn me out, I can make that for myself. Not only a living for myself, but I will set up an institution that will supply a living for a lot of people and will be doing it long after I am dead." He talks of a new lawsuit, then discusses some home and medical remedies for his sister's kidney stones. Finally, he writes, "If things work out, I will see that you have the best treatment money can buy, or anything else you want. I know that you have heard that before, but I am not a quitter, sis, and I am going to win yet. I think this is the time." Stroud never did get out; he died in prison in 1963, having been there since 1909.
