JULIA WARD HOWE. Letter Signed, "Julia Ward Howe," c. early 1900s, 7" x 4.5", two-page folio, Extremely Fine. Ward Howe writes to Mrs. Vaughan, asking her to be a patroness for a reading that will benefit the Armenian Relief Fund. The large signature is shaky, revealing Howe's advanced age; she would die in 1910 at the age of 91. Howe was active in the abolitionist, peace, and woman suffrage campaigns. She was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, but her greatest claim to fame was "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," which was published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1862.
