BENJAMIN HARRISON, 23rd President of the United States. Autograph Endorsement Signed, "Benja Harrison / Col 70 Regt Ind Vol," on the lower portion of a letter datelined March 17, 1863, Gallatin, Tenn., Head Quarters 70th Ind Vols, in which Capt. Parker S. Carson, recommends promotions to fill vacancies caused by promotions in Co. G., 10" x 7.75", Very Fine. Harrison writes, "The above recommendations are approved by me and I request that the appointments may be made at once & notice of appointments sent forward." Light toning; blank integral leaf. Harrison served with the 70th Indiana Regiment from July 1862 to June 1865. For his part in the Atlanta campaign, Harrison was recommended for promotion to brigadier general by Major General Joseph Hooker, who cited Harrison's foresight, discipline, and fighting spirit. Civil War-date documents signed by Harrison are rare.
