JEROME DAVID KERN (1885 -1945), American Composer of musical theatre and popular music. One of the most important American theatre composers of the early 20th century, he wrote more than 700 songs, used in over 100 stage works, including such classics as "Ol' Man River", "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "The Way You Look Tonight".

Here, Kern pens four bars in deep blue ink from, “The Last Time I Saw Paris” above which he has Inscribed, “To William de Melt, with the thanks of the American National Red Cross and his, Sincerely, Jerome Kern.”

Composed by Kern, with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein written in homage to the French capital recently occupied by the Germans. This was the only time Kern set a pre-written lyric, and his only hit song not written as part of a musical. The song was sung by Ann Sothern in the film Lady Be Good (1941) and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
