Autograph Book of a Nez Perce Indian,<p>in horizontal format belonging to Charles Amera, a Nez Perce born in 1870 at White Bird, Idaho. Caleb Charles (as most of the inscriptions are addressed) attended the Chemana Indian School in Oregon. He enlisted in the 4th Cavalry, Troop L, as a trumpeter in 1888 after graduation and served 5 years, until Aug. 1893. Most of the pages are dated June and July, 1888. Most signatures accompanied by a number ( cf. "Alice Wilson No. 68", "Ellen Davis No. 170", "Caleb Charles No. 128")which probably represent a school enrollment, or tribal roll number (or both in a few cases). 48 pages are inscribed, a few have calling card-sized diecuts glued to the page. The book has maroon boards, with gilt and a diecut on cover. Accompanied by his service records from the National Archives.<p>Edges of cover are frayed, spine is gone, both hinges separated. Many pages are loose. Very minor toning, soiling & water spots on inner pages, a few have adhesive and some paper loss, probably where other diecuts were once attached. Ink condition variable.
