Three items: an Otsego County Bank check, 5.75 x 2, filled out and signed by James Fenimore Cooper, “J. Fenimore Cooper,” payable to Latton & Co for $2.375, June 5, 1840; an ALS signed “Bret Harte,” personal letterhead, May 16, 1887, in part: “This is not the photograph I promised you, but one that was taken…as much as two [years] ago. I find that the negative of the one I meant for you has been sent…for engraving, and consequently I cannot get you a copy until it is returned. Until then will you kindly accept this”; an ALS from James Russell Lowell, signed “J. R. Lowell,” December 5, 1853, in part: “How truly sorry I was to hear of the blowing-up of your magazine. But it is not so irreparable as if it had been a powder-magazine, though perhaps all the harder to be borne because it was only in posse & not in Esse…There are as good fish in that buccaneering sea of Bibliopoly as ever were caught, & if one of them have broken away from your harpoon, I hope the next may prove a downright Kraaken on whom, if needful, you can pitch your tent & live.” In overall fine condition, with a toned mounting strip along the left edge of the Lowell letter.
