The letter reads, "<I>Understanding that my neighbor Mr. Ezek.Tompkins is an applicant for a clerkship in your department I take the liberty of backing his application by testifying to his excellent character his correct conduct and his capacity for the situation required. He is of a most respectable and influential family in my neighborhood in the country and his father Mr. Stephen B Tompkins is one of our most active and public spirited men.</B></I>" The recipient of this letter had recently been named to Zachary Taylor's cabinet as Secretary of the Treasury.
