<B>Author Washington Irving Autograph Letter Signed</B></I> one page, 7" x 9" matted and framed with engraved portrait to 24" x 15.75", New York City, April 5, 1849, to William Meredith, probably Washington, D.C. The letter reads, "<I>Understanding that my neighbor Mr. Ezek.Tompkins is an applicant for a clerkship in your department I take the liberty of backing his application by testifying to his excellent character his correct conduct and his capacity for the situation required. He is of a most respectable and influential family in my neighborhood in the country and his father Mr. Stephen B Tompkins is one of our most active and public spirited men.</B></I>" The recipient of this letter had recently been named to Zachary Taylor's cabinet as Secretary of the Treasury. Evenly toned paper, smoothed folds.
