KATHERINE LEE BATES (1859-1929). American Educator and Author, best known for her Poem: “America the Beautiful”.
(c. 1915-20) Rarely offered Four-page Descriptive Imprint brochure Signed, “Katherine Lee Bates”, no date or place, measuring 6.5” x 5.25”, Choice Crisp Extremely Fine. Includes the complete four full stanzas of her Poem “America the Beautiful” which is printed on the front page, where Bates has fully signed her name in the lower border. The other three pages contain a description by Katherine Lee Bates of how she came to write the poem in 1893 during a trip out West, and of the popularity which it enjoyed from the start. This historic brochure was written some “twenty odd years” after the poem. The author Bates, felt that the popularity of the poem which has become our second national anthem, was due to “the fact that Americans are at heart idealists, with a fundamental faith in human brotherhood.” A lovely, extremely nice piece of historic Americana with a gorgeous 2.25” long signature “Katherine Lee Bates.” Ex: EAHA Auction, Nov. 1, 1997, Lot 16.
Katharine Lee Bates (August 12, 1859 – March 28, 1929) was an American songwriter. She is remembered as the author of the words to the anthem "America the Beautiful". She popularized "Mrs. Santa Claus" through her poem Goody Santa Claus on a Sleigh Ride (1889).
